Emotion, motivation and attitude

We are now at the activating processes. Is this going too fast? No issue. From the very beginning... Every person has so-called processes that cannot be directly observed. These processes are internal to humans. This is also called a “black box” because no one outside can look into it. Theemotion,motivationandAttitudebelongs to the activating processes. The counterpart to this are the cognitive processes, which deal with perception, learning and memory. You are welcome to take a look at these too. Now this is about the so-calledActivating processes

What did these pictures trigger in you?

In the best case, they have activated something in you. At best, this activation becomes oneemotion. You start to feel something. Whether positive or negative. Something is happening inside you...

This happens all in one, the emotions that arise should not be confused with the terms Moods,Affects and feelings.

  • Moods:These do not relate to a specific issue. These are long-lasting sensitivities.

  • Affects: These are short-term feelings that are difficult to control. These can be acceptances or rejections.

  • Feelings: An experience that is connected to emotion. This is also about the interpretation of the emotion.

How do we define emotions?

Emotions arise from external stimuli. Before an emotion can take place, there is an activation. The resulting stimuli can be perceived as pleasant or unpleasant.

Basic emotions
How do you describe an emotion?

Emotions can be described using 4 characteristics:

  • excitement: This describes the inner excitement, why an emotion arose or what stimulated it.

  • Direction: It is important to recognize which direction the emotion is leading. Is this positive (pleasant) or negative (unpleasant)?

  • Quality: What type of emotion can be recognized? (e.g. optimism)

  • Consciousness: Are we aware that this process is taking place? Are we aware that we are experiencing an emotion at this moment?

motivation

Why does motivation come after emotion? If we expand the emotion, the term motivation emerges. We are now expanding motivation to include the aspect of goal orientation. Now we are controlled a little more because we are oriented towards this one goal.

Why do we act like this?

We now want to address this question. We need to clarify little things about this.

needsandshootsshould not be taken as synonyms for the term motivation

  • needsare deficiencies. We have a desire for something and want to satisfy it. This lack forms our need.

  • Shoots is our inner self, which helps us to satisfy the existing need.

An equally important difference is the primary and secondary motives

  • Primary motives: These are innate processes that are biologically determined. Hunger, for example, is a primary motive. This includes the concept of drives.

  • Secondary motives: We are talking here about recognition and freedom, for example. We have been able to learn these through our lives. Thus, the environment or socialization activates these conscious or unconscious motives.

To answer the question, the simplest answer is that it is biologically determined. Since we would like to delve a little deeper, we will introduce you to probably the most important and famous model...

Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Hierarchy of needs.png

As you can see, these are 5. different needs.

The lower needs must be satisfied. Only then do you go one level further up. It is important to mention that the levels do not have to be completed 100% in order to move on to the next one.

There is  another subdivision:

Needs 1-4:

Deficit needs must be satisfied, otherwise physical and mental              have consequences

Need 5:

Growth needs, if satisfied, can affect a person                            make you happier because it changes the unrest in you and goals              and recognitions arise

Needs only motivate action when they have not yet been satisfied. The more you have reached a level, the less motivated you are to continue working on the previous one

Attitude

The final component of the activating processes is the attitude. The attitude is defined by the motivation, with an object assessment. You give the object a certain like or dislike. There is also the assessment of people.

ABC model (affect, behavior and cognition)

Here we are talking about breaking down the setting into 3 components:

  • Affective (emotional): How important is the product to you? How important is quality to you? Feelings play a very important role in this component.

  • Conative (behavior): How do we behave towards the product? Do we buy it or despise it.

  • Cognitive (subjective knowledge): Is the product of good quality? What do we know about the product? What experiences have you had with the product?

Affect (emotional)

behavior

Cognition (subjective knowledge)

It is important to note that each component can be arranged differently. This creates different relationships.

  • C => A => B => cognitive information processing

  • C => B => A => Behavioral learning processes

  • A => B => C => hedonistic consumption
